Lactarius deliciosus. Saffron Milkcap.

The Saffron Milkcap can look very different.


However, the carrot-colored milk is a clear characteristic.

The Saffron Milkcap has clear dents on its stem.

Lactarius vellereus

 Supposedly edible after boiling and throwing away the liquid.


They turned blue green!
Question is: do I still want to eat them?

Purple milk

Lactarius repraesentaneus (Northern Bearded Milkcap, Fiolett svovelriske)
Bearded, white milk turning dark purple almost immediately.
Edible if blanched before sauteing but I resisted the temptation.
It smelled weird.
Lactarius flavidus or Lactarius uvidus (Grå fiolettriske)?
L. flavidus stains “livid lilac”. Slightly sticky cap. Hollow stem in aging mushroom. Inedible. Rare.
L. uvidus stains “dull lilac”. Poisonous/suspect. More common.

All the above mushrooms were found in the Rondane National Park, Norway

Lactarius vellereus. Fleecy Milkcap.



Lactarius vellereus. Lodden hvitriske.
Edible after boiling and throwing out the liquid.
Somehow, I am not tempted.

Hard and compact. Slightly kid leathery cap.
Milk in abundance. Very hot and spicy tasting.
Short stem. Tapering at base.

Lactarius vellereus. Lodden hvitriske

Lodden hvitriske

Ikke lett å se forskjellen.
Men lodden hvitriske har kort stilk, rikelig melkesaft i unge eksemplarer og fjernstilte skiver,
mens hvit pepperriske har høy stilk og tynne, tettstilte skiver.
I tillegg smaker melkesaften til lodden hvitriske mild, men kjøttet skarpt.
Begge er spiselige etter avkoking, men det frister ikke.

I tillegg pleier det være mye bøss på hattoverflaten til lodden hvitriske.
(Hvit pepperriske har høy stilk og tynne, tettstilte skiver).

Lactarius (matrisker)

On the NYMS mushroom walk upstate in Harriman State Park  recently,
Soppdagelse's New York correspondent chanced upon
purply, meaty Lactarius.
Not sure which Lactarius this one is, unfortunately.
